The John Hope Gateway is an educational and visitor center located at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE). Named after John Hope, an 18th-century botanist and the King's Botanist for Scotland, the Gateway serves as the main entrance to the garden and acts as a hub for learning, conservation, and environmental awareness.
Opened by Her Majesty the Queen in 2010, the John Hope Gateway is a striking modern building designed with sustainability in mind. It features eco-friendly materials, renewable energy sources, and a green roof that blends with the natural surroundings. The building itself is a testament to the RBGE's commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable practices.
The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh delivers world-leading plant science, conservation and education programmes, with a mission is to ‘Explore, Conserve and Explain the World of Plants for a Better Future'. The 'Botanics' in Edinburgh and its three Regional Gardens - Benmore, Dawyck and Logan - attract over one million visitors every year. Each Garden is different in topography, soils and climate enabling an exceptionally wide range of plants to be grown. Together they constitute one of the richest plant collections on earth.
